If the other points feels like too much work, it’s a quick solution to check if all the pages in your chosen search results have the keyword in the title. If they do not have it, then it is an indication that the competition is not very high.

Usually when people who do not know SEO is building a site, it is likely that all pages of the site gets the same title. If the sites you are competing against have not received any kind of search engine optimization (and this is really step one), you can usually count on that the competition is low. This is of course not a precise tool at all, but it can give an indication in a very fast way.
